A Barista’s core responsibility is to expertly prepare and serve a range of coffee-based drinks, but the role extends to ensuring customer satisfaction, maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in the workspace, and contributing positively to the overall operation of the establishment.
As the first point of contact with customers for many, a Barista must be personable, approachable, and knowledgeable about the products offered. They should be passionate about coffee and eager to share that passion with customers while providing excellent service and a great experience. This is a role that requires both technical skills (in terms of brewing, drink preparation, and equipment maintenance) and strong interpersonal abilities to create a welcoming environment.

-
The Barista should be familiar with different coffee beans, their flavor profiles, and how to brew them correctly to enhance the customer experience.
-
Understanding and executing the art of espresso-making, including steaming milk to the correct temperature and texture, is critical.
-
Baristas must also create an assortment of non-coffee drinks, such as hot chocolates, teas, and specialty drinks, and should be prepared to experiment with new recipes and innovations when requested.
-
-
Customer Interaction and Service:
-
Greet customers warmly and ensure their orders are taken promptly and accurately.
-
Offer menu suggestions based on customer preferences and make recommendations on drinks, snacks, or seasonal specials.
-
Listen to customer requests carefully, including special modifications (e.g., lactose-free milk, alternative sweeteners), and ensure they are met efficiently.
-
Handle customer complaints or concerns with professionalism, offering quick and thoughtful solutions to resolve any issues that arise.
-
Engage with customers to foster a positive experience, creating a friendly and welcoming environment for them to enjoy their time at the café.
-
-
Cash Handling and Transactions:
-
Process customer orders through a point-of-sale (POS) system, handling cash, credit, or debit card payments.
-
Accurately give change and provide receipts.
-
Maintain knowledge of pricing, promotions, and special deals, ensuring customers are informed of any discounts or offers.
-
Ensure a smooth transaction process while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to cash handling protocols.
-
-
Workspace Maintenance and Cleanliness:
-
Keep the coffee station clean and organized, including the espresso machine, grinders, and countertops, ensuring that all equipment is functioning properly and maintained daily.
-
Clean and sanitize the seating area, countertops, and utensils regularly, adhering to health and safety regulations.
-
Regularly check and clean the coffee machines, milk frothers, and other equipment to ensure optimal performance and extend their lifespan.
-
Replenish supplies such as milk, syrups, cups, and lids, keeping track of inventory and notifying the management team when stock levels are low.
-
-
Team Collaboration:
-
Work alongside other team members in a cooperative manner to ensure smooth operations, especially during peak hours.
-
Assist in setting up and closing down the café, which may include restocking, cleaning, and preparing for the next shift.
-
Ensure that any issues related to inventory, equipment, or customer complaints are promptly addressed to maintain a high standard of service.
-

Product Knowledge and Upselling:
-
Continuously improve knowledge of coffee types, brewing methods, and product offerings to enhance customer service.
