Job Description
BARISTA
A Barista is responsible for preparing and serving a variety of coffee drinks, with a heavy focus on high-quality Espresso, Macchiato, and Cappuccino. You are expected to master the equipment, maintain a high speed of service during the busy morning and afternoon “coffee hours,” and provide a welcoming atmosphere for regulars.
Key Responsibilities
-
Beverage Preparation: Expertly grind coffee beans and pull espresso shots, ensuring correct extraction times and crema quality.
-
Milk Texturing: Steam and froth milk to the correct temperature and consistency (latte art is increasingly expected in urban specialty shops).
-
Equipment Calibration: Adjust grinder settings daily based on humidity and bean freshness to maintain flavor consistency.
-
Customer Engagement: Take orders accurately and offer recommendations based on flavor profiles (e.g., origin of the beans).
-
Sanitation: Maintain a pristine workspace, including back-flushing the espresso machine and cleaning the steam wand after every use.
Salary & Market Outlook (2026)
The demand for skilled baristas has surged as Albania’s cafe scene modernizes.
| Cafe Type | Base Monthly Salary (Net) | Potential Earnings |
| Standard Neighborhood Bar | 55,000 – 65,000 ALL | + Regular small tips |
| Specialty Coffee Shop | 70,000 – 90,000 ALL | Higher base for skill |
| Luxury Hotel/Resort | 75,000 – 100,000 ALL | Often includes benefits |
-
Tipping: While not as high as for waiters, baristas in busy city centers often receive “change tips” that add up significantly over a month.
-
The “Barista Shortage”: Due to the rapid opening of new international franchises and boutique roasteries, experienced baristas are currently in a strong position to negotiate better wages.
Requirements & Skills
-
Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of espresso machines (e.g., La Marzocco, Nuova Simonelli) and grinders.
-
Latte Art: The ability to pour basic patterns (hearts, rosettas) is a major advantage for securing higher-paying roles in Tirana.
-
Social Skills: In Albania, a barista is often a “community figure.” A friendly, communicative personality is essential.
-
Language: English is highly valuable in the “Blloku” area of Tirana or coastal tourist spots to serve the growing expat and tourist population.
2026 Industry Trends
-
Specialty Growth: There is a shift away from dark-roasted commercial coffee toward “Single Origin” and “Light Roast” beans, requiring baristas to explain flavor notes to customers.
-
Alternative Milks: Knowledge of working with oat, almond, and soy milk is now standard in most urban Albanian cafes.
-
Cold Brew & V60: Beyond the espresso machine, manual brewing methods (Pour-over, AeroPress) are becoming popular in the capital’s trendier spots.
Industry Tip: If you are looking to advance, consider a Barista Certification (like SCA). Many top-tier cafes in Albania now prioritize certified staff and are willing to pay a premium for those who understand the science behind the bean.
