Key Responsibilities

  • Fabrication & Assembly: Join, fabricate, and repair metal and other weldable materials by applying appropriate welding techniques.

  • Blueprint Reading: Interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and measurements to plan layout and procedures.

  • Equipment Maintenance: Set up and maintain welding machines, including adjusting voltage, amperage, and gas flow.

  • Quality Control: Inspect finished welds for defects (cracks, porosity, etc.) and ensure they meet structural specifications.

  • Preparation: Clean and prepare surfaces to be welded using grinders, wire brushes, and chemical solutions.

Technical Skills & Techniques

A proficient welder should be familiar with several of the following processes:

Process Description Common Uses
SMAW (Stick) Shielded Metal Arc Welding Construction, pipelines, and repair work.
GMAW (MIG) Gas Metal Arc Welding Manufacturing, automotive, high-speed production.
GTAW (TIG) Gas Tungsten Arc Welding Aerospace, piping, thin metals (stainless, aluminum).
FCAW Flux-Cored Arc Welding Heavy construction, shipbuilding.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Certification: Valid welding certification (e.g., AWS, ASME) is often required, depending on the industry.

  • Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods, lift heavy materials, and work in confined spaces or at heights.

  • Safety Consciousness: Expert knowledge of safety equipment (PPE) like welding helmets, gloves, and heat-resistant clothing.
