Job Description
Commis III
A Commis III is an entry-level role in the kitchen, responsible for basic food preparation tasks and assisting more senior chefs with various duties. This role is an excellent starting point for those looking to build their culinary career, as it provides hands-on experience in a professional kitchen environment.
Responsibilities:
- Food Preparation:
- Assist in the preparation of ingredients, including washing, peeling, chopping, and portioning vegetables, fruits, and other ingredients.
- Measure and mix ingredients according to recipes and assist with simple cooking tasks such as boiling, frying, and baking.
- Prepare sauces, soups, salads, and other basic dishes under the supervision of senior chefs.
- Mise en Place:
- Ensure that all prep work is completed before service (mise en place), including setting up workstations with necessary utensils and ingredients.
- Restock and organize workstations as needed throughout the shift to maintain efficiency.
- Support Senior Chefs:
- Assist the Commis I, Commis II, Chef de Partie, and other senior kitchen staff in preparing more complex dishes.
- Follow instructions from senior chefs, ensuring that tasks are completed accurately and on time.
- Kitchen Hygiene and Cleanliness:
- Maintain cleanliness in the kitchen by washing dishes, utensils, and equipment, and ensuring the workspace is clean and organized.
- Follow all food safety and hygiene standards, including proper storage and handling of ingredients.
- Help with cleaning kitchen surfaces, floors, and equipment at the end of the shift.
- Basic Cooking Duties:
- Carry out simple cooking tasks under supervision, such as grilling, frying, or steaming ingredients.
- Monitor cooking times and temperatures to ensure food is cooked properly.
- Assist with plating and garnishing dishes when required.
- Inventory and Stock Control:
- Assist in receiving deliveries, checking quality, and storing ingredients correctly.
- Help with keeping track of inventory and reporting shortages or quality issues to senior chefs.
- Continuous Learning:
- Take every opportunity to learn from senior chefs and improve your culinary skills.
- Attend training sessions and practice new techniques as instructed by the kitchen team.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Basic Cooking Knowledge: Familiarity with basic cooking techniques, kitchen equipment, and ingredients.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to follow instructions carefully and maintain accuracy in preparation.
- Hygiene Awareness: Strong understanding of kitchen hygiene and safety practices.
- Willingness to Learn: Eager to improve skills and knowledge in the kitchen.
- Teamwork: Ability to work as part of a team and assist other chefs as needed.
Education and Experience:
- A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
- No formal experience required, but previous experience in a kitchen or culinary training is advantageous.
- Willingness to learn and grow in the kitchen environment.
Working Conditions:
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, hot kitchen environment.
- Physical stamina to stand for long periods and perform tasks like lifting, chopping, and stirring.
