Job Description
Bartender
A Bartender is responsible for preparing and serving drinks to guests in a bar or restaurant, creating a welcoming environment, and ensuring guests have an enjoyable experience. The role includes mixing cocktails, serving drinks, keeping the bar area clean, and managing bar inventory.
Responsibilities:
- Drink Preparation:
- Prepare and serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks following established recipes or guest preferences.
- Mix cocktails, pour wine, and serve beer according to the bar’s standards.
- Ensure the correct glassware is used for each drink and garnish appropriately.
- Guest Service:
- Greet guests with a friendly and welcoming demeanor.
- Take drink orders and ensure timely service.
- Engage with guests, answer questions about the drink menu, and provide recommendations.
- Maintain a positive and professional attitude to ensure guests have a great experience.
- Cash Handling and Billing:
- Process drink orders and handle payments, including cash and credit card transactions.
- Tabulate guest bills accurately and ensure prompt payment.
- Provide correct change or receipts to guests and keep track of tabs.
- Bar Maintenance and Cleanliness:
- Keep the bar area clean and organized, including washing glassware, wiping counters, and cleaning bar equipment.
- Follow all health and safety regulations, including proper food and drink handling.
- Clear empty glasses and clean tables or bar surfaces as needed.
- Inventory Management:
- Monitor stock levels of spirits, wine, beer, mixers, and other supplies.
- Restock the bar during and after shifts to ensure supplies are available.
- Notify the bar manager of any inventory shortages or reorder needs.
- Upselling and Promotions:
- Promote special drinks, seasonal cocktails, or events happening at the bar or restaurant.
- Suggest additional items, such as appetizers or dessert drinks, to enhance guest experience.
- Use upselling techniques to increase sales of premium products.
- Compliance and Safety:
- Check guests’ identification to ensure they meet the legal drinking age requirements.
- Follow alcohol service laws and regulations, ensuring responsible alcohol service.
- Monitor guest behavior and refuse service to intoxicated guests in a professional manner.
- Team Collaboration:
- Work closely with servers, kitchen staff, and management to ensure smooth service.
- Communicate clearly with the service team about guest orders and any special requests.
- Assist with opening and closing duties, including cleaning the bar and restocking supplies.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Mixology Skills: Ability to mix drinks and cocktails quickly and accurately.
- Customer Service: Friendly and engaging personality, with excellent guest service skills.
- Attention to Detail: Ensure orders are correct and drinks are prepared to a high standard.
- Communication: Strong verbal communication skills to interact effectively with guests and staff.
- Multitasking: Ability to manage multiple drink orders and guests in a fast-paced environment.
- Physical Stamina: Capable of standing for long periods and handling the physical demands of bartending.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
- Previous experience as a bartender or in a similar role is required.
- Knowledge of popular drinks, cocktails, and mixology is essential.
- Certification in responsible alcohol service (e.g., TIPS or ServeSafe) is often required or preferred.
Working Conditions:
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as bars are often busiest during these times.
- Physical stamina to lift heavy items, such as cases of liquor or kegs, and stand for extended periods.
- Flexibility to handle busy shifts with high guest volume while maintaining quality service.
